General Strike of June 3, 2026: a great assertion of the strength to defeat the Labour Package and of hope in a Portugal with a future

General Strike of June 3, 2026: a great assertion of the strength to defeat the Labour Package and of hope in a Portugal with a future

Today’s General Strike is a powerful action to defeat the Labour Package [of labour laws] which was presented by the PSD/CDS Government and supported by Chega, IL [parties] and the bosses’ confederations. It is a clear rejection of social regression and of the heightened exploitation that they wish to impose upon the workers.

Workers’ living conditions: the labour package, wages and rights

Workers’ living conditions: the labour package, wages and rights

The life of the workers, the reality of the Country, and the ongoing attack on their rights through the Labour package: this is the theme of the parliamentary question we are putting to the Government today.  A process that takes place against a backdrop of growing hardship for the general public, who are facing rising prices that threaten to persist and worsen, increasing difficulties in accessing public services, particularly healthcare, and difficulties in accessing housing due to speculation encouraged by the Government.

A Call for the General Strike

A Call for the General Strike

The Government, employers, Chega and the Liberal Initiative thought they could increase precariousness, further deregulate working hours, further oppress the lives of working people, dismiss without just cause, and that everyone would simply accept this as normal.

15 Reasons to General Strike

General Strike - June 3, 2026

15 Reasons to General Strike

They say labour laws are outdated and need to be "more flexible", thinking of young people. They say it's not worth fighting. They raise prices; they deregulate working hours; they don't even want to hear about increasing wages and pensions; they never stop profiting from the war and from your work. They are the economic groups. For you, who live out of your work, there is no shortage of reasons to say enough is enough, to join the General Strike on June 3. It is necessary to defeat this Labour Package as a whole and each of its measures.

The Portuguese government must respect Sahrawi people's right to self-determination

4 August 2025

The PCP rejects the Portuguese government's position of disrespecting the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people, which is enshrined in international law, in particular in repeated United Nations resolutions. The Portuguese government's alignment with the position of the Kingdom of Morocco represents support for the continuation of Morocco's illegal occupation of territories in Western Sahara, in direct violation of international law.

For an immediate recognition of the State of Palestine and an end to Israel's crimes

1 August 2025

In view of the government's announcement of contacts about a possible recognition of the State of Palestine, deferring a possible decision to September, the PCP reiterates that such a decision is urgent and should have already been implemented, as the PCP has repeatedly proposed in Parliament. The announcement that has now been made by the Prime Minister, is inseparable from the pressure of public opinion and the broad movement of solidarity with the Palestinian people in the face of the ongoing crimes perpetrated by the State of Israel.

On the ‘trade’ agreement between the US and the European Union

30 July 2025

1. The US/EU agreement signed by Trump and Von der Leyen constitutes a deplorable act of surrender by the EU in the face of US impositions and interests. An agreement signed by the President of the European Commission that neglects the interests of EU countries and their peoples, particularly Portugal.

The PCP condemns the government's complicity in Israel's crimes

30 July 2025

No words can express the horror and suffering that Israeli Zionism and US imperialism are inflicting on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and also in the occupied territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with the criminal complicity of the European Union. Day after day, the mainstream media show images of boundless violence and cruelty and a sinister accounting of the deliberate murder of populations, including the infamous imposition of starvation that is hitting babies and other children particularly hard.

Government propaganda doesn't erase the reality: life is difficult, and the country is hanging by a thread

17 July 2025

Either the Portuguese State continues to have its hands stained with blood or it recognises the State of Palestine

11 July 2025

Please allow me to welcome the presence of the Palestinian Ambassador, who is in the galleries following our debate. Since 2011, the PCP has been tabling projects to recognise the State of Palestine, in accordance with UN resolutions. This is an inevitable decision that has been refused time and time again, based essentially on two fallacies: The first is that the recognition of the State of Palestine must be dependent on the European Union.

Process of privatisation of BES/Novo Banco - Crime against the Country

10 July 2025

After the privatisation of BES, after the Espírito Santo family and the groups that orbited around them had squandered the Bank's resources for decades, after mismanagement had opened up a financial hole, after the then PSD/CDS government having moved towards a resolution of BES in 2014, which opened the door to the flight of assets, holdings and a good part of the capital.

On the announcement of the privatisation of TAP

10 July 2025

Late this morning the government announced that it had decided to start the first phase of TAP's fourth privatisation process. After the first attempt almost destroyed TAP with the bankruptcy of the buyer - Swissair. After the third attempt ended with the capitalist fleeing and the company going bankrupt. Now the government intends to hand over to foreign capital that which is one of the main national companies, the country's biggest exporter of services, the guarantor of our territorial continuity and sovereignty in air transport.

The serious situation in obstetrics

4 July 2025

The news of the death of yet another newborn this morning, which was apparently avoidable if the woman had been given proper care, highlights the unsustainable situation of obstetrics in the National Health Service resulting from the actions of the current and previous governments. They have eroded the working conditions and pay of doctors in general and obstetricians in particular, even though they knew that obstetrics, along with paediatrics, was one of the specialties most coveted by the private sector, which, due to its lucrative potential, would seek to hire more specialists.

Housing has been turned into a commodity and its right into a business

2 July 2025

Thousands of people took to the streets this weekend, all over the country, demanding homes to live in. It is preposterous that there are hundreds of thousands of empty houses in Portugal when there are tens of thousands of families without a home to live in. Despite being enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, the right to housing is far from being a reality for all families. And the guarantee that everyone has access to a decent home is increasingly distant.
