The ongoing debate about a possible reintroduction of Mandatory Military Service (MMS) now arises, at the hands of those who were responsible for its end, associated with the war, when what is necessary is to uphold Peace efforts and counter the militarist drift to which they want to associate our Country. What is needed is Armed Forces at the service of Peace and within the framework of their constitutional missions, which requires the total rejection of their subordination to the warmongering strategies of NATO or the militarisation projects of the European Union.
The PCP has always defended the MMS within a logic inserted in the constitutional designs – of Peace, cooperation, added value for the country's sovereign capacitation and affirmation, aspects that are contrary to the logic of the ongoing debate. In this context, the PCP refuses any initiative, such as that coming from various sectors, driven by interests other than national ones
More than the debate on the current circumstances and motivations about the MMS, what is needed is to respond to the state in which the options of successive PS, PSD and CDS governments – options that have always had the support of those who are today leaders of Chega and IL – led the Armed Forces, particularly in terms of wages, careers, social dignification, and modernisation of equipment.
