"A Worrying Nobel"

Article by Albano Nunes, member of the Secretariat of the CC

The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the USA’s President an imperialist superpower which calls upon itself the role of the world’s police force and is engaged unto a great proportion militarist escalade, is not only "amazing", but dangerous and disturbing.

The absence of credentials which, in the minimum, can qualify Barack Obama for such prize, are flagrant, and even those inclined to "obomania" have considered this matter as a "hasty" and "premature" decision. However, others, alias belonging to different political families, consider that decision as a critic to the " unilateral" foreign policy undergone by the previous North-American presidents ( starting by Georges Bush) and as an incentive to the conflicts’ solution through dialogue and political negotiation and not military force. Others mention it as a "poisoned gift", aiming to subjecting the USA’s action ( wanted as arbitrary). We, not considering the Nobel Committee’s real motives as irrelevant, simply follow the facts and what they tell us is that such an odd decision fits as a glove, into the "operation Obama"- besides, running into an accelerated exhaustion process, caused by the capitalist crisis depth and the continuous peoples’ resistance towards the North-American dictate – aiming to clean the USA’s dirty face and open space for its international level action. Sarkozy’s reaction, France’s and the EU’s militarization paladin, in close alliance with the USA, is elucidative: " this prize confirms America’s return to the peoples’ heart".

For a long time, the Nobel Peace Prize was loosing the credibility it had won, although all its deliberated omissions (and how many!...from Gandhi to Ho Chi-Minh, from Joliot-Curie and other giants of the Peace struggle), ambiguities and orchestrations. The awarding (very rare) to personalities such as Martin Luther King, Arafat, Mandela or Le Duc Tho, although, in these three former cases, deplorably together in the forced company of the executioners they fought against ( Shimon Peres and Yitzak Rabin, De Klerk and Kissinger) brought it prestige and political importance. Future will tell if its awarding to the president of the main war supporter country and vex over the most elementary human rights, will not represent the ringing of the bells for the dead of an institution which should promote the assertion of the values of peace, solidarity and friendship among the peoples.

It is significative that the announcing of the prize was made at the same time of one more Counsel of War meeting, at the White House, having as agenda, the Afghanistan disaster, general Chrystal’s claim of the urgent sending of at least 40 000 soldiers unto the operations’ setting, a strategy to be followed to face a situation that might immediately be considered as of "insurrection" and attempt to win a war that many have considered hopelessly lost. The Nobel Prize awarding to Obama clearly risks to end up covering, not a peace policy, but a war escalade. Besides, as already the PCP’s Press Cabinet underlined, the North-American imperialism front, in which it develops its violent offensive is vast, which makes the Nobel Committee decision not consentaneous with the idea of peace. And not to any doubts remain about the importance of what is at stake, there we have the laureate, posing as a "global president", interpreting the prize as "an affirmation of America’s leadership" and "an appeal to action".

No, Barack Obama’s compromise is not with peace, but with the great North-American capital and its prey policy, with its imperialism and its action aiming to impose the USA’s supremacy at world level. A dangerous compromise, which no reward can vanish.
