The victory in the presidential elections in Colombia of Gustavo Petro, the candidate of the progressive coalition Pacto Histórico, is of great political significance. The defeat of the candidates of the tenebrous Colombian oligarchy and US imperialism represents the defeat of “uribismo”, a system of criminal power, which for decades has turned Colombia into a drug trafficking paradise and a platform for US aggression against the peoples of America and, in particular, against Bolivarian Venezuela.
After decades of courageous popular struggles, in which many thousands of Colombians paid with their lives for their resistance in the face of violent repression and their struggle for freedom, justice and social progress, the prospect of implementing the just aspirations of the Colombian workers and people, namely the implementation of the Havana Peace Accords is finally opened.
The result obtained by the Pacto Histórico represents not only a victory for the Colombian people, but also for the struggle of the peoples of Latin America for their rights and sovereignty.
Saluting Gustavo Petro on his election as President of Colombia, the PCP at the same time salutes the Colombian Communist Party and other forces participating in the Pacto Histórico and reaffirms the solidarity of the Portuguese communists against any attempts to question their historic electoral and political victory and their action designed to promote democracy, social progress and peace.
