The PCP expresses its great concern in view of the escalation of the murders carried out by Israel of the head of Hamas' political leadership, Ismael Haniyeh, in Tehran, Iran, and of Hezbollah leaders in Beirut, Lebanon.
These actions are an expression of Israel's condemnable policy of state terrorism, which seeks by all means to exacerbate tension and plunge the Middle East into a widespread confrontation, with even more dramatic consequences for the peoples of the region.
These crimes are part of the premeditated attitude of the Israeli authorities to obstruct all efforts and initiatives that promote peace, dialogue and peace in the Middle East, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, including the national rights of the Palestinian people.
This attitude has the complicity, support and cover-up of the US of its criminal policy, as was deplorably revealed by Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington where, to the applause of Congress, he eulogised zionism, evaded the genocide of the Palestinian people and called for war against Iran and for more US arms, with the reaffirmed support of Biden, Harris and Trump.
The Portuguese government must set aside its compromising silence and condemn Israel's escalation, crimes and flagrant violations of international law and demand an end to the illegal occupation and colonisation of Palestinian territories.
The PCP reaffirms the need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and urgent humanitarian aid for the Palestinian population, an end to the violent repression in the West Bank, the materialisation of the Palestinian people's right to a sovereign and independent State, with the 1967 borders and capital in East Jerusalem, and the implementation of the refugees' right to return, as determined by UN resolutions.
Welcoming the agreement recently reached by the different Palestinian forces in Beijing, the PCP calls for solidarity with the just national cause of the Palestinian people and to the struggle for peace in the Middle East, at the outset with an end to the genocide of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and of the escalation carried out by Israel, which threatens to spread the war to the whole region.
