On the death of Dimitris Christofias, former General Secretary of the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL) and former President of the Republic of Cyprus, last June 21, the Central Committee of the PCP expressed its deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Central Committee of AKEL, and through it to all its members, to the family of comrade Dimitris Christofias and to the Cypriot people.
In the message addressed to AKEL, the PCP recalled Dimitris Christofias’ path highlighting his commitment to the struggle for the emancipation of the working class and all workers, as well as to the cause of the inalienable national rights of the Cypriot people, fighting tirelessly for the liberation of his homeland from the illegal occupation of a part of its territory by Turkey and for the reunification of his country.
The PCP also stressed that, at a time when the communists feel saddened by the disappearance of one of the leaders of the international communist and revolutionary movement, AKEL continues the political and human legacy of Dimitris Christofias, the struggle for the ideals to which he gave himself, for the cause of the liberation of the workers and peoples from all forms of exploitation and oppression, for socialism and communism.
On this occasion, Jerónimo de Sousa, General Secretary of the PCP conveyed a message to Andros Kyprianou, General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, where he expressed his deepest condolences and sympathy on the death of Comrade Dimitris Christofias and reaffirmed PCP's solidarity with AKEL.
