Strengthen the National Health Service, guarantee the provision of care to all in the public service

When a major operation is underway led by the economic groups in the disease business, their political representatives and propagandists, including reactionary sectors that have always wanted the destruction of the National Health Service, it is a national imperative, in the name of the health of the Portuguese, to demand the strengthening of the NHS in order to fully guarantee the right to healthcare.

“Strengthen the NHS. Guarantee access to healthcare”

More than 40 years after the adoption of the law that created the National Health Service on September 15, 1979, the NHS today faces a gigantic operation led by private groups in the disease business, their political representatives and the usual propagandists that have done everything, over the years, to have these groups replace the public service in providing healthcare and thus see thousands of millions euros entering the coffers of their companies, public money that should be used to strengthen the NHS.

Public transport. Strategic sector to ensure the right to mobility and territorial cohesion

A year has passed, last April 1st, since the cuts in the price of public transport passes, right in the phase when most of the population was in lockdown due to the measures to prevent and combat the epidemic. It was, as the PCP stressed at the time, a step of enormous significance for an important part of the population. Important for those who live and work in large metropolitan areas, due to the vast scope of the measure and of the significant reduction in mobility costs.

Fight the virus and defend the rights of the retirees, pensioners and elderly

The last few months have been marked by an exceptional situation, as a result of the outbreak of COVID -19 and the sanitary measures to prevent and fight it, in which the National Health Service and its professionals have played an irreplaceable role. We have entered a new period of resuming life in the country, a path towards the normalisation of economic activity and the life of the Portuguese aware of the need to comply with the basic rules of health protection, individual and collective.

70th Anniversary of the trial of Alvaro Cunhal

Today, May 5th, we mark a particularly striking moment in the life and history of the Portuguese Communist Party. Seventy years ago, during his trial in a fascist Court, Alvaro Cunhal delivered a memorable intervention where, with remarkable lucidity and courage, he proceeded to judge and condemn the fascist regime. There are many and significant moments in the life and struggle of the Portuguese Communist Party that we will mark and celebrate during the centenary commemoration of PCP's heroic existence.

In the fight against the virus, defend the rights of children and parents

The consequences of the fight against the Covid-19 epidemic outbreak struck in full children and youth. We know that everything that happens in the lives of parents while workers, has a huge impact on children's lives: schedules, labour links, wages, are decisive for the organisation of family life. From the moment that all teaching establishments were closed, on March 13th, these consequences became gigantic.

May Day: This is the time of resistance and struggle

In the context of this situation that we live due to the epidemic, it becomes more important to be here with this solidary presence, a struggle that is of everyday. Today we are witnessing this problem of the virus that can kill, that kills, and we often forget those who have their lives destroyed because they lost their jobs, their wages, lost individual and collective rights

Respond to the epidemic outbreak and its economic and social impacts. Fight for an alternative policy

Presentation of the Communiqué of the Political Committee of the Central Committee of the PCP on the current situation 1- The Covid-19 epidemic outbreak highlights the serious structural problems that mark national life and is being used as a pretext to serve the aims of capital. The public health measures to combat the epidemic that have to be taken, and that the PCP has supported, have unavoidable economic and social impacts, but their consequences depend on the political options and decisions that are taken.

The situation of workers and May Day

We are going to have a May Day, in this year of 2020, under different conditions of pressure on the health and rights of the workers, making this day of struggle even more important. In this time of epidemic, prevention and treatment are needed and this is being done and must be done. But at this time, on the footsteps of the epidemic outbreak, an epidemic of attack on the workers, their rights, wages, bonds, work hours, working conditions, hygiene, safety and health is being promoted. Covering the virus with the footprint of exploitation is being deeply forced on the lives of workers.
