Jerónimo de Sousa, after having taken part yesterday in AKEL's rally devoted to the issue of the reunification of Cyprus and which was held within the context of the election campaign for that country's parliamentary elections, was today received by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias.
During the meeting, the President of the Republic of Cyprus thanked the Portuguese Communists for their permanent solidarity with the Cypriot cause and stressed the significance and importance of the relations of friendship between the PCP and his Party – AKEL. He also expressed his solidarity with the Portuguese people and workers, who are those that most suffer with the economic crisis that is affecting the country.
The PCP delegation, which also included Ângelo Alves, member of the Political Committee, also met, this morning, with the Cypriot workers' class Trade Union Central – PEO – which, expressing its solidarity with the Portuguese workers' struggle against big capital's offensive, identified general lines of this offensive, namely the attack against workers' rights, as lines of attack that are also felt in Cyprus, despite recognizing that the Cypriot workers have, in the Government, an ally that works to prevent the crisis from expressing itself in ways that are as brutal as those in Portugal.
