Statement by Carlos Carvalhas, General Secretary

About Portugal's participation in a possible retaliation to the attacks against the USA

The answer to the brutal attacks and the expression of respect for the sorrow, suffering and grief endured by the families of the victims and the American people require serenity and not anger, rationality and not spirals of violence, require the combat against all forms of terrorism and all its roots and not retaliations and vengeance, which do not bring back lost lives.

The death of more innocent people does not redeem the sacrifice of thousands of US citizens, victims of intolerable attacks. Portugal should not follow in tow, nor contribute, politically and militarily, to a climate of irrationality and worsening of international relations.
