"Zero"

"Avante!" Article by Angelo Alves, member of the Political Committee and of the International Department

The Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty Revision Conference closes tomorrow.

The Conference was preceded by the North-American Administration and its president’s media offensive. His initiative of the taking place of a Nuclear Security Conference, in Washington, the signature of a new START agreement between Russia and the USA and consecutive visits and speeches, both of the North-American President and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, launched the idea of a new cycle and a North-American administration, deeply compromised with diplomacy, détente, disarmament and peace.

But reality is out there once again, giving way to the PCP’s foresights, and many others, considering such issues. Not withdrawing the importance and value of any positive conclusions that might be produced by the TRC Revision Conference, as well as the new START Treaty signature, one ought to observe reality. And that same reality demonstrates that the recent USA’s movements mainly aimed to keep its supremacy within the military field, geo –strategic and technological, orchestrating international conferences, in order to isolate states which do not surrender to imperialism’s domain and hinder its decline tendency within the economic and diplomatic fields.
It would be a mistake to conclude the USA has taken the paths towards peace and cooperation. It would be sufficient to read the recent news on the USA having currently more soldiers out on the fields in Afghanistan than  they ever had in Iraq; just as the USA’s so advertised “withdrawal” from Iraq, which, at the moment, is settled by the presence of 91 thousand soldiers, within this country; just as what has been revealed on the USA’s spreading of secret military activities within the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa; and confirmed by the USA’s prodigal son, Israel, through revealed official documents , detaining a powerful nuclear armament which it tried to sell out to the South African apartheid regime, in 1975 or yet, the news on Obama’s speech at West Point Military Academy, under the repetition of the famous concept of “the new international order” to which, currently, he adds the idea that “this century’s burdens cannot be sustained only by our soldiers”(1). A delivered speech, resulting from the NATO experts’ report conclusions and recently disclosed, pointing out unto two major lines of its new strategic concept: NATO’s military action, at a global level and under any pretext and expressive increase of military expenses of all its members.

But as if this news weren’t enough to prove the USA’s and NATO’s insistence towards the path into militarism and unilateral imposition, the recent events round the so-called  “Iran’s nuclear file”, dissipates any doubts. An agreement signature on nuclear fuel exchange among Brazil, Turkey and Iran, in the exact terms of the Group 5+1 demands, recognizing simultaneously Iran’s sovereign right to develop its nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, was, notwithstanding the interests of each of the subscribers, a very clear demonstration of the existing possibilities in the international diplomacy field and the complex and deep force rearrangement which accelerates with the deepening of the capitalism crisis. Such an agreement was under a USA’s previous boycott attempt and followed by “a cowboy” reaction: for the USA, such an agreement is not valid and currently they try to involve Russia and China in Iran’s sanctions’ approval, as if nothing had taken place. Therefore its clear the USA’s compromise stage towards diplomacy, peace and détente, in other words, zero.
