The presidential elections in Venezuela, in which more than 8 million citizens participated, constituted an important democratic accomplishment whose results signify an eloquent popular support for the Bolivarian process, all the more significant when expressed in a difficult context of attempts to condition the free expression of the Venezuelan people and of putschist manoeuvres to boycott the elections, including pre-announcements of non-recognition of the elections by the US Administration and the European Union.
The PCP salutes Nicolas Maduro for his re-election as President of the Bolivarian Republic with 68% of the expressed votes, and all the revolutionary, progressive and patriotic Venezuelan forces that have achieved an important victory resisting the manoeuvres of interference and destabilisation against Venezuela and the increasing economic and financial blockade by imperialism, especially by the US imperialism.
The PCP condemns all actions aimed at calling into question the indisputable legitimacy of the Venezuelan elections and calls on the Portuguese Government to take a responsible stand and in accordance with the principles of non-interference, denoting respect for the independence and sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and for the will of the people of Venezuela expressed in the polls.
The PCP reaffirms its solidarity with the struggle of the Venezuelan workers and people who have a right to freely and peacefully decide their own destiny and for their profound aspirations to build a country of justice, social progress, development and cooperation.
