PCP tables initiatives on labour legislation

The PCP is committed to combating right-wing politics, while at the same time intervening and taking initiatives. It is in this context that we are tabling four initiatives today with the aim of strengthening workers' rights and improving their working conditions.

A bill to repeal the expiry of collective bargaining. Collective bargaining is an instrument that should help negotiate more favourable working conditions for the workers, including wage increases. Employers’ associations have used the expiry date to attack workers’ rights. The PCP therefore proposes repealing the expiry of collective bargaining, which is essential for increasing wages, strengthening rights and improving working conditions.

We tabled a bill to reinstate the principle of the most favourable treatment for workers, to ensure that the rules applied are always the most favourable for workers.

The evolution of science and technology must be put at the service of the workers. Scientific knowledge and technological innovation make it possible to produce more, with higher quality and efficiency, in less time, which is why we are tabling a bill to reduce weekly working hours to 35 hours, without loss of pay or rights, for workers in the public and private sectors. Reducing working hours also helps to improve the articulation between personal and professional life.

Finally, we are tabling a bill to strengthen the rights of night and shift workers. It has been proven that night work, shift work and continuous labour lead to physical and mental strain due to the wear and tear of the work and make it difficult to reconcile personal and professional life. That's why we propose that night and shift work be limited to technically and socially justified situations; that proper compensation be established with a minimum amount for the respective allowance; that night work be clarified, defining it as between 8pm and 7am; that the right to an earlier retirement age be recognised, as well as the right to a bonus when calculating the retirement pension.

Other initiatives will follow in the coming weeks, responding to concrete problems and demonstrating that the way forward is to break with right-wing politics and that an alternative policy that responds to the interests of the workers, the people and the Country is possible and necessary.
