"Latin America"

Translated "Avante!" article by Albano Nunes, Member of the Secretariat of the CC

Between Latin America and Europe, the contrasts are an evidence. Whilst in our old continent, a social regression violent offensive develops, and fascism and militarism dangerously grow, with NATO’s support and Germany performing new steps, towards affirming itself as a great power, amid Latin America democratic and progressive trends predominate.

Socialist Cuba, with its achievements and revolutionary firmness, carries on irradiating its mobilizing example. Nicaragua’s Sandinista revolution, almost upon two decades of dramatic interruption, resumes its liberating course. Bolivarian Venezuela, Bolivia and Equator, change processes, achieve great success in the struggle against poverty and the sovereign use of its resources in the benefit of , not the capital, but in social and cultural progress of their own peoples. Other anti-neoliberal change processes are in progress and even amid Chile, finally, the possibility of dismantling was is left of Pinochet’ s regime arises. With the ALCA’s historic defeat and the cooperation structures creation as ALBA, UNASUR or CELAC, a basically solidarity Latin-American integration is existent. The major trend is rupture towards neo-liberalism and imperialism, and a courageous affirming of sovereignty before the IMF’s and multinationals dictates, for a real improvement of life conditions of the great masses, historically subjected to the most fierce colonial and neo-colonial exploitation, as concerning the indigenes communities.

Any utopia ought to be wrong. There exists, as in all change processes, contradictions and illusions which cannot be ignored and imperialism’s counter offensive must not be under estimated, in order to revert a deep unfavourable evolution and recuperate its domain. Sophisticated attempts, of fascist nature, in order to throw down Evo Morales, Rafael Correa and Nicolás Maduro were recently defeated, just as previously, concerning Hugo Chavez government, as in Portugal, during the September 28 and March 11 coup attempts, upon each counter-revolutionary defeated attempt with the presence of popular masses, the change processes instead of falling back, strengthen and deepen. But imperialism counts with its powerful economic, political ,ideological and military means to destabilize, subvert and throw down governments which do not submit, as what happened in the Honduras and Paraguay, and what experience shows, is capable of the worst of crimes to achieve its purposes.

The PCP always has been and will be, close to workers’ and Latin-American and Caribbean peoples, valorises the progressive and anti-imperialist changes nature in progress, condemning the Yankee imperialist attempts, in order to resurrect the poor memory Monroe doctrine. The PCP’s participation in the XX Meeting in S.Paulo’s Forum, which took place in La Paz, August 26-29 last, reinforced the conviction that, whatever happens amid the sharp class confrontation, which runs through all the Latin-American continent, whatever the result in the short term, of inevitable advances and draw backs concerning the progressive and revolutionary processes in progress, Latin America ought never again be the USA backyard.
