"Iraq: Resistance is alive"

Article by Luis Carapinha, member of the International Department

As soon as the Iraqi insurgents intensified their actions so that an already known truth became understandable, although hidden by the media manipulation: in the absence of the military support and the American-British occupant coalition terrorist repression, the Iraqi puppet power, personified by Prime-Minister Maliki, rapidly and soon fell apart.

The fact is deeply embarrassing and disturbing for the North-American imperialism. The Iraqi sands turned into a deadlock for the USA, which, in 2007, increased their military forces up to 160 thousand soldiers.

A fortnight ago, on the passing of the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, Bush had declared that the USA were in the right road, in order to achieved a great victory ( in Reuters, 19.03.08 ). The situation on the field, where the " allied " troops have lost more than 4300 soldiers, refutes his words, once again.

Barely ten months ahead of the change of the White House tenant, the despair in showing the " progress "of his followers, hastened the " Cavalrymen Attack " operation, conducted by the Iraqi forces, financed and armed by the USA. The proof of strength, targeted against the civil disobedience called upon by the so-called Mahdi Army, connected to the political-religious leader Moqtada al-Sadr, spread from Bagdad to the Xiita majority main towns, in the south of the country and had the participation, both on the field and air, of North-American and British soldiers. But, after days of violent combats, hundreds of victims, and , once expired the ultimatum, decried by Maliki (who happened to consider the insurgents " worse than Al Qaeda " , in Reuters, 29.03.08), the truth is , the Iraqi resistance forces were in full or partial control of Bassorá, Nassiriya and other important cities, which proves the popular support they have.

It is also important to underline the meanwhile announced withdrawal (in USA Today. com, 30.03.08, negotiated by Maliki’s party representants and allies, in Iran, and under the mediation of an Iranian general …) did not signify a resistance handover of war weapons and was preceded by Moqtada’s restatement of the strategic aim to end the occupation of Iraq.

The struggle for the liberation of Iraq is a long and hard battle. A battle of resistance against time, with up’s and down’s, advances and retreats. Resistance to the brutal occupation, sovereignty and independence being a legitimate and sacred right of the Iraqi people, and that cannot be mistaken for terrorism.

Imperialism knows it. Therefore, the criminal invasion of Iraq – on which, credible data already have proved to have as consequence more than a million victims among the Iraqi population – does not spare efforts to criminalize the resistance and tarnish its national nature. Namely, through the multiplying of massacres and incitement to sectarian violence.

A situation, which only can be overtaken by gigantic efforts to bring together the union of the resistance forces and the overcoming of divisions and barriers of ethnical and confessional nature.

A reality that reinforces the importance of solidarity. Because, as mentioned in the PCP’S Public Act of denunciation of this unfair war, the resistance answer "objectively contributes for the containment of the intents of global domination by the American imperialism and for the hope of a future of just and lasting peace, respecting the sovereignty of the peoples and the territorial integrity of all countries". To resist is to win and the Iraqi people are resisting.
