"An extraordinary victory"

Article by Pedro Guerreiro, member of the CC and of the International Department

It would be sufficient to verify the manner how the 65th anniversary on the Victory upon the Nazi-Fascism was (not) celebrated, to confirm how imperialism’s ideological multiform apparatus has oscillated among the most total silence and undignified attempts of history forgery on what concerns the World War II roots, development and outcome.

The World War II and the force changes which therefore resulted, along with the reinforcement of the social progress field, national liberation, peace and socialism, meant not only the defeat of the Nazi-Fascism purposes and ambitions, but also a drawback for imperialism intents.

Within the II World War outcome, numerous peoples chose towards the building of new socialist societies, amid which, and finally, free from man –to-man exploitation, the resources, the economic capacities and potentialities of each country would give an effective answer to their needs and aspirations; new societies which offered peace, friendship and the most active solidarity to all peoples throughout the world. Colonized peoples stood up, liberating themselves from the colonial centenary empires’ shackles, laying hold of their national sovereignty and independence. And an extensive, organized, workers’ class movement, which conquered, reinforced and enlarged social progress ( such as collective negotiation, salary increase, work schedule reduction, holidays, paid holidays, holiday and Christmas subsidies, employment with rights, social security, admittance to health and education, to retirement, among others) for millions of workers, imposing many drawbacks on capitalist exploitation. Developments, advances and progressist and revolutionary achievements, within which communists had a major role.

Under the USA’s leadership, this is the legacy, which imperialism promptly and actively fought against, creating NATO ( to which fascist Portugal was invited as a founder member), imposing the arms race , promoting the most shameless and violent interference, settling and supporting fascist dictatorships and breaking out the most ferocious wars against peoples.

Upon 65 years, what continues to frighten and causing panic among capitalism’s heralds, is the World War II’ outcome and the resulting strength force correlation, which made possible, millions of men and women’s liberation from the Nazi-Fascist horror, but equally from the exploitation and oppressor system which created it, that is, capitalism (itself).

Therefore, the occurrences’ meaning round the World War II is also within the core of the current ideological struggle, namely, as the heroic and important historic period, is the live witness that capitalism is an imposition and not a doomed fate, and that workers and peoples not only detain the skills, but also the possibility and the necessity, to struggle and to be (once again) the main characters of their own liberation.

And today, just as 65 years ago, communists carry on struggling for this just ideal and legitimate aspiration. Nowadays, just as in the past, our firm and coherent devotion towards the struggle for freedom, social and national emancipation, Man’s liberation from exploitation and oppression, will allow us to achieve the building of the path towards victory.
It is of the greatest importance to engage in the combat against the attempts which urge to erase from workers and peoples conscience, to forget or use historical disfigurement, on the World War II outcome, which was a Victory. Indeed, a huge Victory within the workers’ and peoples’ struggle! An admirable Victory of the democrats and anti-fascists! An extraordinary Victory of the communists!
