"From « Europe joins us» to « More europe»"

Translated "Avante!" article by Rui Paz, Collaborator of the International Department

Durão Barroso delivered a disastrous speech, in Strasbourg, at the beginning of September, whispered by the EU and periphery countries’ great powers monopolist bourgeoisies, which, being more and more isolated and discredited see “federalism” and a “super -European state” as their life insurance towards their exploitation and oppression policy on their countries’ workers and peoples. The EU peoples’ march towards the brink of ruin, became worse since Maastricht, the Euro, ECB and the Lisbon Treaty, which currently is to be deepened with the so-called Budget Pact, had, from its beginning , the workers’ and peoples‘, subdued to the European great capital, opposition.

The European one-party, formed by its two major components, the Christian-democracy and the socialist and social-democratic parties, opted, always when possible, to forbid the peoples to have a word on the decisions that were to be taken. They are the ones who have been plundering the State incomes for years, privatizing banks and profitable companies, offering fiscal incomes to the great private capital in order to declare the State has no money to accomplish its social functions and that the best way is to thin it more and more. They are the ones who have being liquidating the labour rights and the civilizational conquests, achieved through the workers’ struggle under the influence of the XX century socialism building and the Neo-fascism defeat. They were the ones who, as Gerard Schroeder, the social-democrat German chancellor stated “ broke up the war taboo”. Currently, in more and more countries, soldiers of almost all EU states are integrated in NATO and other kind of alliances, involved in armed interventions, spurring ethnic and religious conflicts and massacring sovereign peoples. This is the programme concealed by the so-called “More Europe” or “ A political Europe” and of which Durão Barroso defended its deepening , by urging a “ state federation” founding. As the EP ’ PCP members underlined in a press cabinet statement, this path drives towards the building of an “ imperialist nature block holding colonial type relations amid its womb”.

Generations who did not live through the 25th of April do not know that, at the beginning of the EEC´s founding, which would later on become the EU, the socialist and social-democrat parties proclaimed the “ Europe of the workers” or even a “Socialist Europe”. Mario Soares, in order to win elections in 1976, invented the “Europe with us” motto, proclaiming the Socialist party was against the “ Europe of the trusts” and for the “Europe of the workers”. He used to state he was against “ Portugal’s approach to the European Communities, in the purely capitalist perspective” “ which did not correspond to the Portuguese people’s interests” and drove away from the “ imperatives of a genuine national independence, conditioning the Portuguese society’s change on the path towards socialism”. All this babbling did not prevent the PS’s leader and his party , once in government, of changing into determined builders of the monopolies’ Europe and in ardent grave-diggers of national sovereignty.

Currently, before the practised fraud policy, it ought to be the whole discredit if a socialist or social-democrat party stated it defended an “”Europe of workers” or of sovereign peoples and equals in their rights.

That is why the European one-party , currently adopted a new slogan of imperialist and chauvinist nature: “More Europe!” . And so, it is frequently heard every morning , even from sectors which claim they are “left-wing”, the crisis’ solution is : “More Europe!”. Later, in the afternoon, social-democracy repeats the same gibberish. And at night, the Christian-democrat or conservators’ government leaders end the prayers with the very same invoking.
