On the elections in Hungary

The result of the Hungarian elections is marked by the defeat of Fidesz – the political force that has ruled the country for the past 16 years – and by the victory of Tisza – the party led by Péter Magyar, who until recently was a member of the party led by Viktor Orbán –, now with only right-wing and far-right forces represented in Parliament, which suggests the continuation of policies contrary to the interests of the workers and the Hungarian people.

The victory of Tisza – a political force created in 2020 and relaunched in 2024 with Péter Magyar taking the helm – will represent, despite differences, the continuation and deepening of key aspects of Fidesz’s policy at the service of big capital, including those aligned with the European Union’s neoliberal and militarist policies. Among those planned are, for example, the gradual abolition of regulated electricity and gas prices for households; the imposition of private pension funds on new workers; privatisations; the application of the Stability Pact criteria; or increased military spending within NATO and greater alignment with the EU’s policy of continuing the war in Ukraine.

It is worth recalling that Viktor Orbán’s party, which has been part of one of the far-right parliamentary groups since 2024, once shared the European People’s Party (EPP) Group in the European Parliament with the PSD and the CDS.

On this occasion, the PCP salutes and expresses its solidarity with the communists and other Hungarian democrats and patriots who persist in defending the rights, interests and aspirations of the Hungarian workers and people, as well as peace and social progress.
