"The XXIth century Sykes-Picot"

Translated "Avante!" article by Jorge Cadima, Member of the International Department

British and French diplomats built a secret plan in order to undergo the partition of the then Ottoman Empire (Turkish), in 1916. Whilst deceiving the Arabs with independence promises, they planned among themselves to control the region ( leaving some titbits for the Russian Czarism). Upon the Russian Revolution, in 1917, the recent soviet power discovered the Sykes-Picot agreement within the archives at the Foreign Office and therefore, revealed it to the world. A century after, the imperialist partition plans are to be repeated.

About a decade ago (June 2006), the North-American Armed Forces Journal published a map , redesigning the Middle East boarders. Since then, imperialist wars have given place to Iraq and Syria dismantlement and the surge of the “Islamic Caliphate” , the so-called ISIS. Currently, semi-official public confessions on these objectives begin to take place. John Bolton, the USA ex-ambassador at the UN, wrote (in NY Times, 2015.11.24) “ the truth is that Iraq and Syria as it was known, do not exist anymore”. And about the so-called “ Russia-Iran axis and their intermediaries”, he states with no hesitation: “ the objective of recuperating for the Iraq and Syria governments, their previous boarders, is a fundamental objective, contrary to the American, Israeli and Arab friendly states interests”. And Bernard Bajolet, the French Intelligence Chief for Abroad (DGSE) said: “ the Middle East one knew ended and I doubt it will return […]. But as it is, it ought to have a different model from the one established after World War II”, when those countries stopped being French and British colonies. The Belgium portal that reproduces these statements (www.rtl.be,2015.10.28) adds that” the CIA director [John Brennan] expressed a similar point of view”. The same objective was expressed by William Hague, the British ex- Foreign Affairs Minister, speaking at the house of Lords, in support to the British bombardments in Syria:” One must be open to new solutions. After all, if communities and leaders are not able to live in peace within Syria and Iraq, one ought to make them live in peace, but separately, undergoing those countries partition in (BBC, 2015.12.02). To be noted the audacity in pretending to be before a problem of incapable natives to govern themselves, with nothing in common with two decades of wars, invasions and aggressions, during which British imperialism played an important role.

Domination objectives explain what might seem to be contradictory, as the à la carte alliances or the pretexts to intervene in the region: the British government, which wanted to bomb the Syria government in 2013, is currently bombing Syria by invoking the ISIS threat…that fights the Syrian government. That is the pretext. Reality is otherwise, as demonstrated by the clearer role of Turkey ( a NATO member) in the support and traffic that support the ISIS. The Syrian government presented a formal complaint to the UN, this current month, on the presence of four planes belonging to the “anti-ISIS coalition”, monitored by the USA and having bombed one of its army base, “ killing 3 soldiers and wounding 13” (www.cbc.ca, 2015.12.07), in a “ greatly dominated province by the ISIL”, in (BBC,2015.12.07). Last week, the Iraqi army suffered the loss, during a fight against ISIS, loosing tens of soldiers, during an aerial attack undergone by USA planes (Press TV, 2015.12.18). The USA “anti-ISIS coalition’ seems to be the real ISIS Air Force. Therefore, and not at all surprising, as in the unsuspected Washington Post (in 2015.12.01) headline, , “ The Iraqi people consider the USA is hand-in-hand with the Islamic State.

Chaos and terrorism are weapons to justify wars and aggressions, and, within the home level, the state of emergency and the repression mechanisms out of control. The economic and class interests, of the great capital are within their roots. And thus, this is imperialism.
