"What is at stake ?"

Translated "Avante!"article by Pedro Guerreiro, Member of the Secretariat of the CC and Responsible of the International Department

Those, doubtful of what is really in stake, concerning the current situation in Brazil, the debate and approving of president Dilma Roussef ‘s impeachment admissibility follow-up, carried out by the Brazilian parliament, on April 17th last, is a clarifying and disturbing deep moment.

During many hours, it became clear the non-reason for the president’s impeachment, as well as the coup nature process and the deep reactionary, obscurantist and anti-democratic content, members of parliament having praised of the dictatorship dark times and its torturers, at the moment of voting. considering that, although in minority, the voices in defence of democracy, workers and the Brazilian people, proved a brave and dignified presence.

The Brazilian parliament, having accepted Dilma Roussef’s impeachment, the so-long expected coup assault to the Brazil presidency ( and government) took one more step. One ought to remember that the right-wing forces and the great capital, historically linked to the North-American imperialism, never accepted the 2014 elections defeat ( its consecutive 4th defeat in presidential elections since 2002), seeking, from the first moment, to impose president Dilma’s impeachment, that, having achieved the victory in the presidential elections, amid a more adverse force correlation, namely in parliament. In other words, as correctly denounced, the Brazil right-wing and the great capital have the purpose, along with the coup operation in progress, to impose what was denied at the ballot-boxes.

However, and besides the intense misinformation campaign and manipulation carried out by the great power media ( namely with the pretext of the fight against corruption) , more and more wider sectors and strata of the Brazilian society – as proved by the huge popular demonstrations, the growing awareness, organized participation and struggle unity – it is more and more clear that the coup consummation ought to represent, for Brazil, a violent attack against labour and social rights, democracy and freedom, sovereignty and independence, and to the important achievements upon Lula’s election, in 2002, during the last 13 years.

Therefore, the determination in carrying on the struggle against the coup, not allowing truces and seeking to fight during the current phase, within the Senate (by passing through two polls - a first by simple majority and a second which ought to demand a two third majority – in order to be consummated). Even though, considering Dilma’s temporary withdrawal from the presidency, and the establishment of a coup government, by Michel Temer, the vice-president, the political and social forces that were united round the defence of democracy have already declared this government illegitimacy, and its determination in facing its anti-democratic intents. A struggle that ought to represent a strong contribution for the hard and demanding battles, coming along, in a near future.

The situation in Brazil proves the sharpening of the class struggle within this Latin America great country ( one of the greatest world economies), confronting those who struggle for a sovereign and independent, democratic Brazil, to advance towards new progressive achievements, and where workers and the people of Brazil ought to find their aspirations materialized, with those who seek to impose exploitation intensifying, injustices and social inequalities, dominant class privileges, anti-democratic power and the giving in before the North -_American imperialism. Naturally, the outcome ought to hold important repercussions throughout Latin America and the world.
