“The Trumps”

Translated “Avante!” article by Ângelo Alves, Member of the PCP Political Committee and of the International Department

As the PCP foreseen, the measures applied by the great capital and the imperialist main powers, in order to resolve – in their class point of view – the capitalism economic crisis, deepening of the system contradictions and the deep and complex process of force rearrangement at the worldwide level, were , in their own, seeds of new crisis.

It is within this context that one ought to analyse some of the most recent developments in political and geo-strategic levels. Some of them are not new. Such as the case of the emphasizing of the militarist and war nature of the imperialist main powers; the growing confrontation against emergent powers direction; the economic and political power concentration processes and the attack to states sovereignty. At the very same time, the crisis and its own imperialist offensive incites rivalries and disputes, both among great capital sectors ( with repercussions on the national and international levels) and powers or imperialist poles.

Rivalries amid the dominant classes and powers, at their service, are intrinsically within the capitalist system nature , and always were present within the binomial agreement / rivalry inter-imperialist framework. However, before the current context, the rivalries issue acquires a much more important dimension and expression. Before this reality, one ought to read the USA and Europe recent events and their repercussions in the force rearrangement in progress, at the world level.
In these pages one has expressed the opinion that Donald Trump’s election is in itself an expression and an answer of deeply reactionary character, to these growing contradictions, rivalries and disputes. Nevertheless, and without minimizing just concerns, it is necessary to underline three notes on the anti-Trump “disturbance” within the European Union.

First, the European Union leaders having reacted against Trump’s inhuman policy concerning refugees and immigrants are the very same that barely pronounce themselves on the possibility of Germany deport 100 000refugees (RTP/Feb.10), on the Hungry announcement of intending to place refugees in containers camps along the boarder (Expresso, Feb10), or the death of 10 refugees and migrants per day in the Mediterranean Sea, during the first two months of the year (TVI 24, Feb10).

The second, is concerning the “humanist” indignation against Trump and his external policy, contrasts with the EU deep silence and complicities and its governments, before numerous crimes currently taking place, as against the people of Palestine and the aggression criminal war in Yemen, among others.

The third, as proved by the European Parliament discussion on the EU future, this week, what moves its supporters to wave at “ external dangers” (including Trump) is not a bare rebate of conscience on the old transatlantic imperialist old alliance. It is, mainly the intention of , amid the framework of dispute and rivalry, accentuate even more the European Union as a “powerful economic and political entity”, a more militarized European Union holding a stronger securitizing direction in the economic plan, and going further in the reinforcement of its economic domain instruments –namely the Euro. These statements did not originate from the far right-wing but by the European Socialist Party. And exactly the running beyond and this imperialist puncture that are in Trump’s origin and of many other “Trumps” throughout the world.
