Speech by Paulo Raimundo, General Secretary of the PCP, CDU Dinner-Rally

Sow in March to reap in April

We are one month away from the legislative elections.

We are one month away from an opportunity to change the correlation of forces in Parliament, open the new path that is necessary and respond to the problems that exist.

Here we are in this beautiful land, in this Grândola Vila Morena, to affirm solutions and join forces to makes contacts, clarification and mobilisation to vote for the CDU.

A stronger CDU is the only guarantee for progress in every person's life.

Last Sunday there were elections in the Azores. We were 85 votes short from electing the CDU MP.

No matter how much they try and make us believe otherwise, the CDU's result destroys once and for all the theory that pours every day in our homes that the CDU is always dropping in votes.

After doubling the votes in Madeira, we now once again grew in the Azores, we had more votes and we were very, very close to electing a MP.

And this was so in a context of false bipolarisation between PSD and PS, a bipolarisation to which the opinion poll operation once again contributed.

These opinion polls influence a lot but are never right.

An opinion poll operation that is there and will continue, and let there be no doubts, it is an operation that will continue and that will always demote us.

There’s nothing to be expected from this operation other than trying to deceive and influence everyone's vote.

And if there's so much effort to demote us, it's because they know that we're doing our job well, that we're growing, that we're expanding, and that's something they can't stand, that's what annoys them, that's what scares them.

But they can come with all the polls and all the operations, there is something that, with our work, contacts, clarification and mobilisation, will happen here, just as it happened in Madeira and the Azores, the CDU will grow, will have more votes and we will elect more MPs.

As the experience of the Azores proves, where 85 votes were missing, every vote counts, every vote makes a difference and that's why no one can stay at home, everyone needs to be won over to vote for the CDU.

Voting for the CDU, the only useful vote for those who are discontented and rightly outraged, for those who have stopped believing, for those who are the target of policies that do not solve any of their problems, but are open-handed for the great lords of the money.

There are increasingly more people realising that something is not right here, there are increasingly more people questioning why there is a huge majority getting increasingly more squeezed and a few profiting as if there was no tomorrow.

It's just that the workers and the people, those who with their work make the economy work, those who with their work create wealth, know that there really is a lot of money and that it is very poorly distributed.

The talk that there is no money, the talk that this is bad for everyone, and it is not possible to increase wages and pensions, the talk of “hold on, hold on”, this talk no longer holds like it used to.

More and more people realise that there are conditions to increase wages and pensions, to invest in public services, healthcare and housing.

They know that it is fair and even possible to increase pensions for all retirees and pensioners.

And this is the time to remind everyone, lest anyone forgets, that we are now in the phase of a shower of promises and a hunt for votes.

Those very same who refused our proposals for pension raises, as the PS did, are the ones who are now promising raises, those who were the record holders of pension cuts, the PSD and CDS, but also those who were there at the time and who are now the faces of Chega and IL, are now promising raises, this is open season for everything.

But people don't have a short memory and they know who they count on and always count on.

It was the CDU that counted and counts for the extra increase in pensions, counted and counts to choose the pensioners and not the economic groups.

And that's exactly what it's about, our proposal to increase pensions by at least 70 euros and 7.5% for all pensioners is an excellent example to show that these are options and not from lack of money.

The increase we propose represents 1,600 million euros more than the value that the PS Government decided for this year's increases.

A value that is exactly the same as the one that the Government decided to renounce in tax benefits to economic groups.

In other words, while the PCP and CDU propose to distribute this amount among more than the 2 million people who have worked their entire lives, the Government's option is to take this amount and give it to four or five economic groups, those of the 25 million of euros of profits per day.

We need to make choices and here at PCP and CDU we opt for the better life to which we are all entitled.

It is fair and possible to increase wages by 15% and a minimum of 150 euros for all workers.

It's true, to implement this measure, the profits of those who earn 25 million a day or the banks that earn 12 million a day would be lower. So, what's the problem? Would the country stop? Would the rivers flow from the sea? Would the flowers stop growing? No, nothing bad would happen, on the contrary, what we would have is a fairer distribution of the wealth that workers created, and 5 million people would recover three years of accumulated loss of 15% in wages due to inflation.

In March we go to the ballot, and the vote of the worker, the pensioner, the NHS user, those who are distressed with the loan payments and rents of their homes, the micro, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, the farmers, the youth, the immigrant, none of these votes can be confused with the votes of the owners of Galp, Pingo Doce, CTT, EDP or Altice.

It is in the CDU that labour, the people, the environment, the better life to which we are entitled are located, it is in the CDU that hope is found.

From the PS we know what to expect and, for those who still had any doubts, the last two years of absolute majority have put an end to them.

Just as we know that what PSD, CDS, Chega and IL would like was to go back to 2011, to go back to the time of cuts in pensions, Christmas and holiday bonuses, wages, the “brutal tax increase”.

Yes, they can now come with a thousand and one songs, put on all their masks, but most of those who now wear the Chega and IL jerseys are the same ones who at the time in the CDS and PSD stood up to applaud the misfortune of our people.

We are very proud of having played a decisive role in 2015 in opening the door to drive out the government.

And this they did not forgive, nor do they forgive.

This is why Luís Montenegro wants to flee the debate with us, he wants to avoid confronting those who are the real force in the fight against the right and right-wing policies, with those who were and will be decisive in blocking the path to his policy and project of impoverishment of the lives of the workers and people, of inequalities and cuts in rights.

We will be there on Saturday at the scheduled time to debate and confront the president of the PSD and it doesn't occur to me that he won't show up.

To all those who rightly want to give a sign to the powerful, who want to give them a squeeze and a shove, it is the CDU that they must support and vote for.

In the CDU, the only ones who do not depend on or owe favours to economic groups.

It is in the CDU that the power of protest and proposal lies.

It's the CDU they're afraid of, it's not the shouting, it's not the demagoguery, it's not the populism.

They are not afraid of that, not only are they not afraid, but they also fund them, give them space and open doors for them.

We are well aware that the PS is not the same as the PSD, that the PSD is not the same as the CDS and that the latter is different from Chega and IL.

We never had any doubts about this.

But, whenever the eternal question arises, whenever it is necessary to choose between the interests of the people or the interests of economic groups, although different they always choose the strongest, and this is what has to stop and for good.

This is the time to choose.

And if we are to choose April, if we are to choose those who produce wealth, those who endure all this, those who deserve and have the right to a better life, those who have worked their entire lives, the youth, the micro, small and medium-size entrepreneurs and small agricultural producers, if you choose April then there is one and only one choice: the vote on the CDU.

The CDU is expanding and growing, and people know, even voters from other parties, from their own experience, that when we grow and move forward, everyone's life improves.

We have never failed and will never fail in proposal, initiative or convergence towards everything that is positive.

There is no achievement of the people and workers which has not had the participation, contribution, struggle and proposal of the PCP and CDU.

There will be many who will vote for the CDU for the first time, there will be many who will vote for the CDU again, and this will be the case the further we manage to take the clarification.

Let's talk, let's contact. Let each person identify who they want to talk to.

Let us not forget the recent experience of the Azores, by one vote you win, by one you lose.

Portugal has a future, we know its capabilities, means and above all we know and trust the strength that our people have, that strength that carried out the April Revolution.

And in this year in which we celebrate 50 years of what was one of the greatest achievements in our collective history, it is the moment to highlight the topicality and future that represent the values of April and the strength of its key player, the people.

April proves that our people are capable of freeing themselves from all shackles and that they are capable of all transformations, no matter how powerful those who exploit and oppress them are.

It is this force that they fear, it is this force that they attack, but it is also this force that is capable of putting the country on the path from which it should never have strayed.

April is a reference, April is inspiration, April is a project that is reflected in our proposals and our programme.

It is in the Revolution, in the Constitution and in the values of April that the present and future of Portugal lie.

This is where the answers and solutions lie to increase wages and pensions, to save the NHS, to guarantee access to housing, for cultural creation and enjoyment, to respond to the rights of parents and children, to once and for all face the shady dealings, cronyism and corruption.

It's time to pursue the better life we have the right to, it's time to vote CDU.

And for those who are rightly worried by the right, here we are to remember and remind, there is no other force capable of confronting the right, like the PCP.

It is more than 100 years of accumulated experience in fighting the right, whatever form it takes.

We haven’t given up on the country, there are resources and means, there are strengths and aspirations, and there are trustworthy and honest people with the will and strength to stop those who think they own everything and put the country on the path that marks our history, on the path that Grândola opened, on the path of April values.

On this path where the people are the ones who dictate.
