Release from the PCP Press Office

On the recent developments in Libya

The PCP condemns the massacre perpetrated by NATO in the city of Tripoli whose death toll, in just two days, rises to more than 2000.

In the aftermath of more than five months of heavy bombing and war by NATO, the real bloodbath perpetrated against the population of Libya’s capital in the so-called “Operation Mermaid”, as well as the events that followed, confirm, once again, the real aims and the true leading figures of this colonialist war of invasion and occupation.

The taking of Tripoli is above all the result, not of a propaganded military victory of the so-called “rebels”, but of a direct intervention by NATO and a true massacre carried out by this political and military structure.

The Libyan people were and are the victims of a crime and of a flagrant violation of International Law, of the United Nations Charter and even of the UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which hypocritically referred the protection of civilian Libyans and recognized the role of the Libyan Authorities.

As the PCP duly warned, and reality is presently confirming, what is at stake with the war and occupation of Libya are not the rights of its people or any desire for freedom and democracy. On the contrary, what is at stake, once again in history and as in the case of the wars in Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan, is the implementation of the strategic interests of the main NATO powers regarding the control of important natural resources, the plunder of Libyan sovereign funds and the imposition of imperialist domination in the region of North Africa and the Middle East.

The war against the Libyan people is indissociable from the international framework of a deepening structural crisis of imperialism, the imperialist answer by force to the popular processes that took place in the Arab World, as well as the growing inter-imperialist contradictions. Denouncing the hypocrisy and the media campaign of lies and misinformation that support the aggressive strategy of the main imperialist powers, the PCP alerts to the fact that the war of occupation of Libya, the growing threats of imperialist intervention in Syria and the renewed Israeli provocations against the Palestinian people, are additional dangerous factors of tension in a situation already marked by instability and a real danger of spreading of conflicts.

NATO’s taking of Libya by the so-called rebel forces represents yet another operation against the right of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nations. But, as reality has already shown in various situations, it will not mean the end of the resistance by the Libyan people against the invasion and occupation of their country and even less of the resistance of the workers and peoples against imperialism’s wars, aggressions and provocations.

In PCP’s view, the end of the conflict involves the withdrawal of the occupying forces and a Libyan national dialogue for a peaceful solution to the internal conflict. Condemning the policy of the Portuguese government of aligning in support for the war of invasion and occupation of Libya and the recognition of the so-called “ National Transitional Council”, the PCP calls on the workers, the youth and the Portuguese people, regardless of differences of opinion regarding Muammar Gaddafi and the present regime, to reject the gigantic media campaign that supports this imperialist intervention, to mobilize and intensify the struggle for peace against North American and European imperialism’s aggressions and interferences in the Arab World and other regions of the globe.
