Portuguese Communist Party condemns Saudi military intervention in Yemen

PCP condemns the military aggression in Yemen by Saudi Arabia with the support of the dictatorial regimes of the Persian Gulf and the US, and demands the immediate end to the bombings.

This military intervention is a violation of international law and an unacceptable interference in the internal affairs of Yemen, confirming the interventionist tendency of Saudi Arabia in the countries of the region, of which the military intervention in Bahrain in 2011, to crush popular revolts in that country, is an example.

The military aggression by Saudi Arabia, which has already provoked the death of hundreds of people and is causing a wave of refugees, aims essentially to impose the domination of imperialism in the Middle East, crush the affirmation of Yemenite sovereignty and ensure the control of Yemen's geostrategic position in the transport routes of energy resources, namely in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

This aggression constitutes a dangerous development in a region marked by great tension, several conflicts and the consequences of the policies of interference, division and war of the US, the NATO powers and their allies in the Middle East.

PCP considers that it is a duty of the Portuguese Government to take a position of firm condemnation of the military aggression in Yemen, to demand the end of the bombings and defend a process of political dialogue that ensures the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen.

PCP reaffirms that the situation of extreme tension in the Middle East, whose consequences are unpredictable, can only be surpassed with the end of the policy of interference and war by imperialism, namely US imperialism, including the end of the occupation of Iraq and the war of aggression on Syria, and with the recognition of the national rights of the Palestinian people, according the the United Nations resolutions.
