PCP held, throughout the country, various actions of clarification and reaffirmation of its solidarity with the Greek workers and people, who resist and struggle against the dictates and impositions of the EU and IMF, and to denounce the subservient position of the Portuguese Government.
Which is at stake is proving that in that Country, as in any other — as the Portuguese have bitter experience — values like democracy or the sovereign right of a people to decide its future, given the disaster to which they are condemning the people, are empty words given the interests of the so called lenders. What the European Union wants to impose, over sovereignty, the interests and aspirations of peoples, is eternal exploitation and impoverishment of the workers.
A condemnable position that shames the country was that taken by the PSD/CDS Government and the President of the Republic, who sided with the frontline of the process of interference and blackmail against the Greek people, assuming an inadmissible attitude that is contrary to the interests of the Portuguese people and Portugal.
It is the path of resistance and not that of submission and subordinations, a path that defends the interests of the people and Country, as demonstrated by the situation in Greece, that the PSD/CDS Government and the President fear. They fear that the workers and peoples, by their resistance and struggle, break with the conditions and impositions of the European Union and the Euro and open a path for an alternative, sovereign policy of justice and economic and social progress, namely for Portugal.
The recent evolution in the European Union and, namely, with its posture with Greece, has reaffirmed the need for a rupture with the right-wing policy and for a patriotic and left-wing alternative, as PCP proposes.
A patriotic and left-wing alternative that puts an end to the path of exploitation and impoverishment that has led Portugal to a situation of dependency, economic decline and social regression — path that PS, PSD and CDS are preparing to continue. A patriotic and left-wing alternative that confronts and breaks with the constraints and conditions of the European Union and the Euro that compromise the right of Portugal to a sovereign development.
A patriotic and left-wing alternative clearly opting for the rights of the Portuguese workers and people, for social progress, for sovereignty and independence, for the affirmation of the values and principles that are enshrined in the Constitution.
