Portugal and the European Union - Breaking dependencies, defending sovereignty, building another Europe

I would like to thank all the guests who accepted our invitation to share with us valuable contributions to PCP’s reflection and proposal. This reflection and the mobilisation of wills to open new avenues for Portugal and for Europe is all the more important when the general framework is that of a growing and almost absolute unsustainability of the situation brought about by the capitalist integration process of the European Union and the policies and ideological matrix that characterises it.

On the European Council of December 13th and 14th

While confirming deadlocks and contradictions that mark the present situation of profound and protracted crisis of the European Union, the discussions, decisions and directions indicated by the European Council continue the deepening neoliberalism, militarism and federalism of the EU and contradict the interests of workers, people and the Country, and the other peoples of Europe.

Concerning the Agreement on the Withdrawal of the UK from the EU

1. The approval by the European Council of the Agreement on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (EU) and the Political Declaration about the future EU-UK relations do not mean the end of this process, as the British Parliament and the European Parliament have yet to pronounce themselves. 2. While the conclusion of this process is still uncertain, PCP reaffirms four central premises of its analysis and position:

Portugal needs an alternative policy capable of building a Portugal with a future

Comrades The proceedings of our Conference "Patriotic and left-wing alternative, for a Portugal with a future" are coming to a close. Here, the situation of the country and the great national problems in the most various fields have been analysed and solutions have been presented and put forward to respond to them.

"Another Europe of workers and peoples must be born and make a break with the current process of capitalist integration"

At the closing of this seminar, jointly organised by PCP’s Delegation in the European Parliament and by the GUE/NGL, I would like to begin by greeting all participants and in particular the speakers at this seminar, valorising and thanking their important contributions. Thanks that, on behalf of the PCP, we would like to extend especially to our foreign guests, representatives of communist, progressive and left parties from Germany, Belgium, Cyprus, Spain and France.

On the condemnation of the campaign of destabilisation and threats against Venezuela and in defence of the interests of the Portuguese community

"On the European Parliament’s decision on Hungary"

The PCP strongly denounces and condemns the attacks on democracy, social rights, fundamental freedoms and guarantees of the citizens in Hungary. But the PCP also rejects the fact that, under the pretext of this situation - which, moreover, portrays the policies of the EU itself - the European Union tries to pave the way to increase its threats, blackmail, impositions and sanctions against the States and their peoples.
