This initiative, called and organized by PCP, constituted an impressive demonstration of the compromise of the ones who participated in it with the ideals of the April Revolution and it was an unequivocal expression of the strength of Portuguese Communist Party and of its capability of mobilization and organisation.

While being a powerfully demonstration of the strength of PCP, of its ideals and commitment to defend the values of the April revolution, the march constituted also a clear reply to the increasing attacks against the rigths, freedoms and fundamental guarantees of the Portuguese workers and people, namely in what concerns to several attempts of interference of the political power in the internal affairs of the political parties, among them, the inspection of the political parties files.

The Portuguese Communist Party denounced such projects as a clear threat against the most elementary individual liberties of the Portuguese and answered with the March “Liberty and Democracy” in which many dozens of thousands of members of the PCP rose their membership card while
passing in front of the Constitutional Court.
