Dear comrades,

Having learnt of the death of comrade Vo Nguyen Giap, it is with great emotion that we convey to you, and through you, to the Vietnamese communists, workers and people, the heartfelt condolences and feelings of fraternal solidarity from the Portuguese communists.

The memory of comrade Giap, a very dear son of the Vietnamese people and leading figure of the international communist and revolutionary movement, will endure in the memory of peoples as an example of a patriot and ardent communist who, with modesty, courage and insurmountable revolutionary determination, devoted his entire life to the liberation of Vietnam and Indochina from colonial oppression and imperialist aggression and for the unification and construction in his homeland of a socialist society.

Vo Nguyen Giap’s name, Ho Chi Minh’s companion, will forever be tied to historic victories over French colonialism and North American imperialism, honouring the communist values and project, and demonstrating that, however great the sacrifices made by the resistance to class exploitation and national oppression, a people who is united and determined to win is truly invincible.

As leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam and inspired military strategist, comrade Giap’s contribution to the universal cause of the workers and peoples of the whole world is very great. His noble example of fighter for the right of the peoples to choose their own way, for peace and socialism will never be forgotten.
