The PCP expresses its concern about the instrumentalization of the Catalan question in order to, once again, suppress the just feelings of national identity and reinforce centralist authoritarian positions much to the taste of Spanish big business.
The PCP views with concern that the escalation of faits accomplis and the absence of a democratic political solution tends to conceal the serious social consequences of the Madrid government's policy led by the PP as well as that of the Catalan government.
The PCP firmly condemns the instigation of reactionary nationalist values and the action of fascist Francoist sectors which for decades oppressed the peoples of Spain, a situation that is all the more worrying since it is part of the securitary drift which in the European Union is limiting and attacking fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.
The PCP considers it necessary that, in accordance with the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, Portugal's sovereignty bodies should in no way endorse and feed, as the government has sadly done, any authoritarian drift of the Spanish government and State.
The PCP reiterates its opinion that the solution to the national question in Spain should be found in the context of a political solution which integrates a broader response that ensures the social and other democratic rights of the workers and peoples of Spain, including the Catalan people.
