End the blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba! Cuba is not a threat! The US blockade and aggression are!

For more than 60 years, Cuba has faced a criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the US. This blockade that aims to undermine the country’s development and the lives of the Cuban people, who are heroically resisting in defence of their rights, their sovereignty and their socialist Revolution.

Having failed to achieve its objectives in over 60 years of blockade, interference and destabilisation, US imperialism is stepping up its threats of aggression against Cuba, in open defiance of the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Over the past year, the US Administration has tightened the blockade and its extraterritorial nature, including through the imposition of a cruel energy siege and unacceptable secondary sanctions targeting those who maintain economic, commercial, cultural or solidarity-based relations with Cuba.

As the resolution entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” is due to be put to the vote tomorrow at the United Nations General Assembly, the PCP urges the Portuguese Government to: maintain its support for this resolution; to take active steps within the framework of its diplomatic relations, particularly within the European Union, to bring an end to the blockade, to all coercive measures and US threats against Cuba; and to develop relations of cooperation between Portugal and Cuba, in the interests of the Portuguese and Cuban peoples.

The PCP demands an end to the US blockade against Cuba, the removal of Cuba from the US’s illegitimate and arbitrary list of so-called “State Sponsors of Terrorism”, and an end to the Trump Administration’s genocidal policy and threats against the Cuban people.

Cuba’s sovereignty and independence, and the right of its people to decide their own path of development in a sovereign manner, free from external pressure and interference, must be respected.

Praising the example of courage and dignity with which Cuba, its people and its government have faced US aggression, the PCP reaffirms its solidarity with Cuba and its people and calls for the Portuguese people to strengthen their solidarity with Cuba, in particular through the campaign “For Cuba! End the Blockade!”, which is being promoted by a number of Portuguese organisations.
