"To dot one i"

Article by Pedro Guerreiro, Member of the Central Committee and of the International Department

After the PS having reaffirmed its electoral program as a programmatic basis for the future government, following the last elections and “launching navigation signals”, now, during its investiture, underlines again the determination in proceeding its policy essential guidelines, that is, the right-wing policy. Reaffirming the PS’s electoral programme signifies, on what concerns the foreign Portuguese policy, a continuation and the deepening of Portugal’s involvement both within NATO and its European pillar, the European Union, pointing out as an aim, Portugal’s full participation in its militarization
and military missions under its (their) command.

As well as this signifies the PS will continue particularly engaged in NATO’s Summit – which taking place is scheduled towards the end of next year, in Lisbon – having as an aim the adoption of a so-called “new” strategic concept, which will endeavour to face the growing
difficulties and contradictions, with which this interventionist and aggressive alliance is confronted while summarizing its world domination ambition.

Reaffirming the PS’s electoral programme signifies to carry on Portugal’s involvement in the international relations’ militarization, assuming as a priority, the Portuguese armed forces’ participation in interference and aggression operations
against other peoples ( as what occurs in Afghanistan, the Balkan and
the Middle East regions or in Africa) or allowing the use of the
national territory for that purpose.

Which means that the
PS will continue being compromised with the neoliberal, federalist
and militarist European Union’s policies, together with the treaty
draft proposal which reinforces them, the Lisbon Treaty.

That is to say, the
PS will carry on performing a foreign policy, marked by the
submission to the great powers’ interests and strategies in the
political, economic and military levels – to imperialism -
outlined within the NATO and the European Union framework. A foreign
policy which integrates the concerning situation’s causes and with
which the overwhelming majority of Portuguese and the Country are
confronted with.

On reaffirming and
assuming, once again the right-wing policy as theirs – and of which
the foreign policy is the flagrant contradiction of what is
consecrated within the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, is an
example and a central component -, the PS, on making believe the
responsibility of a non – “agreement” on the left is not
theirs’, but of others, is but to dodge from any commitment..

In reality, by
dribbling with the so-called “ government stability” and the
proclaimed “open – spirit” and “ opened to all
possibilities” ( meant to be the right-wing and the “ possible
left-wing”), the PS, insofar, proceeds on whisking out of sight its
non- rupture with the right-wing policy, which it carried out and
intends to keep on carrying out.

Besides, on making
an amalgam, as some do, in a mixed “left-wing” bag, only
contributes to elude the PS’s deep responsibilities on what
concerns the taking shape of the right-wing policy during 33 years
and hide those who mostly offered resistance, fought and mobilized
the struggle against it: the PCP.

Portugal, through
its history and friendship ties, which its people keep with other
peoples of the world, owns the conditions to be inserted within the
great current which struggles for a world of progress, peace and
cooperation. For that, it is enough that the principles and a whole
programme concerning the international relations, achieved by the
April Revolution and consecrated in the Constitution of the
Portuguese Republic, must be respected and accomplished – this is
the path to, once again, recover the prestige and the respect towards
Portugal, throughout the world.
