"The crisis and the militarist drift"

Article by Albano Nunes, member of the Secretariat of the CC

The world’s vastness and the capitalist crisis depth, to which no one dares to point out the outcome, surprised many good people, starting by the capitalism theoreticians, executives and apologists themselves. They were astounded and led astray as one could witness, during the Davos pathetical show, where, not only they were not able to find an answer within the economic bourgeois pseudo-science they preached, as being an unquestionable truth, such as the financier system fabulous injections and the so-called measures of "economy re-launching", have proved insufficient and unfruitful. In the absence of a safe compass, they sail adrift, looking for an agreement on the best way to preserve the great capital privileges and avoid social and dynamic explosions, of progressist and revolutionary advance, which can be a threat to the system. And with protectionist measures and leadership and "national egoism" demonstrations, disputes and rivalries, which were thought to be overcome, break out among the capitalist great powers.

But the amazement and bewilderment which struck the dominant classes, do not allow them to hesitate, not for a moment, in pursuing their purpose of always: the greatest and faster profit possible and, for that, the intensifying of the workers’ exploitation and the accelerating of the re-colonization process, a re-colonization which is, in their opinion, necessary and urgent, at the moment, numerous countries and even regions – such as in East Europe – are near to insolvency and when, from Ireland to the "French" Antilles, great dimension popular struggles are developing. The contradictions and conflicts that emerge among the dominant class different fractions, both at each country level and the international level, do not compromise central agreements , concerning the defence of their power. In a formal democratic and peaceful manner, by the course of authoritarism, violence, fascism and war. "Capitalism re-foundation", capitalist development "new paradigm" or the " world economic government", with which the capital ideologues expect to "avoid new crisis", are to be set upon, in one way or another, at any cost.

And so, in the within the development of the struggle to prevent the same as always, to pay the crisis costs and through progress and social change alternatives, of anti-monopolist and anti -capitalist nature, it is necessary to pay great attention to the dragging of swords, which is taking place, with the trivial nature of security and colonialist policies, growing militarism, aggressive alliances development, monitored against the workers’ and peoples’ liberating struggle. It is necessary to follow up the new North-American administration cynical manoeuvres which, by getting rid of Bush’s heavy ballast, and not surprisingly, adopts the same goals, tries to ensure, by force, the USA’s planetary hegemony, developing new oppression and aggression directions, in Afghanistan, Africa, Latin America and in other regions in the world.

The intensifying of the struggle against the European Union accelerated militarization, is necessary, alias, achieved in an articulated and submitted subordinate manner to the USA. It is necessary to denounce the NATO’s projects to celebrate its 60th anniversary, with a new urge, towards this aggressive alliance’s enlargement and strengthening, and which France of Sarkozy has decided to reintegrate its military structure.

And, above all, it is necessary, by rising the sovereignty banner, to fight against the PS Government national abdication shameless policy, the joint involvement of Portuguese military and policemen, in numerous aggression and imperialist occupation operations and the handing over of national territory, from Lages to Oeiras, where the NATO command premises are installed, re-colonization operations, in Africa and in other regions throughout the world. In our daily struggle and in the next electoral battles, this issue must be kept in mind, as underlined during the PCP National Meeting, last Saturday.
