Side by side with the broad aggression of EU against workers and people – of the increase of exploitation, assault and control of strategic sectors and public services, massive transfer of wealth created by work to the capital – the desire to engage in new EU federalist adventures have started to emerge. It should be highlighted that these are presented as a “solution” for an increasingly more serious situation, which is, after all, consequence of putting into place the same old political “solutions” (‘European integration”, single market, common politics, economic and monetary union, stability pact, Euro, treaty upon treaty).
Not happy with the adoption of decisions that strengthen the instruments aiming to influence sovereignty and allow EU to sanction Estates (“peripheral” ones), they are now looking to take advantage of the current economic and social crises to promote an even bigger political and economic domain through the creation of a so-called “European government” and of a budget and a fiscal and federal politics. Such measures, if implemented, would only represent a new step in the process of the capitalist European integration, that aims to consolidate a “Super-Estate” that will benefit capital and the most powerful countries.
These renewed and increased threats to national sovereignty have the sole objective to deepen and strengthen the instruments and mechanisms of interference and political and economical control that the stronger countries and the financial capital have already at their disposal within the EU. Actually, without these it wouldn’t be possible to impose their exploitation and usurpation policies in Europe.
The problems of the people and country will not be solved with more federalist, capitalist and militarist “European integration” or by limiting national sovereignty. These measures, if implemented, would determine the increase of alienation of capability of the Portuguese people to decide about fundamental questions to their present and future, because they would mean the transfer of competences that should be used by the national democratic institutions to the EU antidemocratic and supranational institutions, where the Portuguese people has seen been reduced, virtually to nothing, the chance to defend their legitimate interests.
Those that consciously challenge or deceive by saying that the policy that answers the serious problems of workers and country does not depend of the defense and support of the sovereignty of the Portuguese people – namely when facing the EU and the serious interests that the EU represents – are responsible or accomplices with the politics of subordination that have lead the country to disaster.
Standing up for national sovereignty – that PS, PSD, CDS-PP, as well as BE, despise - is the only way to refuse impositions and attempts to influence, both aiming to attack the interests of workers and country, protect democracy, that is, the sovereign right of the Portuguese people to decide their present and future, to determine in a independent and free way the economical policies, in defense of justice and social progress, to guarantee the use and promote the productive potential of the country, including management of its natural resources, implementing a peace and cooperation policy with every people.
While the feeling and realization of the EU responsibility in the serious social and economical situation of workers and people increases, it is imperative to expose and promote the necessary rupture with their policies, namely by making use of the national sovereignty and taking back the strategic instruments that will allow to deepen and promote the economical development of each country, in the defense of workers and people, in the context of cooperation in Europe.
