Release from the PCP Press Office

Solidarity with the Palestinian people in the face of Israeli violence

The PCP strongly condemns the Israeli government's campaign of violence, joined by armed Israeli settlers, against the Palestinian population in Jerusalem, with the process of expelling Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah and preventing the Palestinians from accessing the Al Aqsa Mosque.

The escalation of aggression by the Israeli government and the Zionist forces aims at the annexation of East Jerusalem and, ultimately, of the entire historic territory of Palestine, denying in fact the Palestinian people their legitimate right to a State - an objective already expressed by Netanyahu and patent in the unceasing construction of settlements and of the Apartheid Wall in occupied Palestinian territory, illegal under international law.

The Zionist violence in Palestine and across the Middle East is inseparable from the connivance and support of the United States of America, which reached new heights during the Trump Presidency, which not only were not reversed, but were confirmed by the Biden Presidency. Violence that is also inseparable from the connivance of the European Union, which imposes sanctions or blockades on countries that resist imperialism’s aggressions, but which – by putting on the same level the occupier and the occupied - remains aloof to the systematic aggression and violation of International Law by Israel.

The Israeli government is committed to sabotaging the solution to the conflict and making the creation of the Palestinian state unviable based on UN resolutions passed many decades ago. The PCP warns that anyone who is complicit in the destruction of this political solution will be responsible for the dramatic consequences that will result from it. It is demanded that the Portuguese government have a clear and vigorous stand, namely when it holds the presidency of the EU Council, to uphold the national rights of the Palestinian people and of compliance with the United Nations resolutions that embody them.

When signalling the 73rd. anniversary of the Catastrophe (Naqba) - which accompanied the proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948 and the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and their land - the PCP reaffirms its lasting solidarity with the Palestinian people and with their just struggle against the occupation and for their national rights, internationally recognised but not materialised.

Appealing to solidarity with the Palestinian people, the PCP demands the release of thousands of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails, an end to the blockade of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, the materialisation of the right of the Palestinian people to an independent State, with the 1967 borders, with capital in East Jerusalem, and the right to return of Palestinian refugees.
