The PCP expresses its congratulations with the liberation of the Cuban patriots jailed in the USA

The Portuguese Communist Party expresses its congratulations for the liberation of the three Cuban patriots Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernández and Ramón Labañino, who were still detained in US jails, since 1998.

The liberation of the last three of the five Cuban heroes unjustly detained and tried in the USA for having exposed the terrorist actions against Cuba carried out by Miami-based terrorist groups is a victory for the Cuban people, in particular for the five heroes and their families, which never gave up the fight to denounce and oppose this injustice and demanding their freedom.

Their liberation is also a victory for the vast campaign of solidarity which was waged throughout the world, namely in our country. It should be recalled that, in September last, René Gonzalez - one of the five patriots, who was freed after serving a 14-year sentence - was present at the Avante Festival.

The liberation of the Cuban patriots takes place in a framework in which the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries is announced whilst, at the same time, there remain serious and unresolved problems and lines of interference against Cuba and its sovereignty, on the part of the United States.

In expressing its congratulations for this victory for Cuba - which is a victory for all peoples who fight in defence of their sovereignty - the PCP reaffirms its demand for an end to the criminal economic, trade and financial blockade imposed by the USA against Cuba - a demand that was recently, and once again, reiterated by the General Assembly of the United Nations, with votes in favour from 193 countries and with votes against only from the United States and Israel - as well as the demand for the closing down of the US base in Guantanamo.

The Portuguese Communist Party greets the five Cuban patriots, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino and René Gonzalez, and their families, for their courage, determination and struggle for justice, as well as the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban people for defending, in the most difficult conditions imposed by US imperialism, their right to decide about their future and that of their Socialist Revolution.
